Forest and water urbanism: Re-Imagining the National Road in Flanders-Belgium
The National road 5 sits on the ridge cutting two valley connections, Dijle towards the sonian forest and senne in the opposite direction. Spaces along the road is occupied by bigger domains which has large plots and huge building footprints, however as you go inside from the road, built density decreases in suburban villa type settlement. Also, this area is experiencing development pressure due to its close proximity to Brussels capital region. Furthermore, the area is threatened by storm water which flows from the ridge and rooftops to the valley
The aim is to organise a connected landscape system with a new form of urban on the basis of the transformation of the existing massive structures on the ridge. This frame with large domains would experience a new ecological structure becoming an urban simultaneously, where floodplain water could be used as the main element to create a series of public spaces. A new vision for this suburbia is about bringing hierarchy of blue and green landscapes and creating the system of slow mobility though them, connecting the valley and Sonian forest to the main centre on the ridge.
